Conrad Kain

A Man of Rare Spirit

Mountain Guide

Philosopher

Friend

He was born into poverty in 1883 in his native Austria. But through sheer imagination and grit Conrad Kain became one of the most respected mountain guides of his era. In order to make ends meet, Kain also worked as a quarryman, surveyor, farmer, trapper and horsepacking outfitter. He explored and helped map the wilds of the Canadian Rockies and was a true jack-of-all-trades.

While he put up notable first ascents in the European Alps, Canadian Rockies and in New Zealand, his friends and clients respected him as much for being a humble man who loved life in the out-of-doors, as one who had the strength and discipline to succeed on Mount Robson or on a solo first ascent of an unclimbed peak.

This website pays tribute to his legacy.
